What is Agentic AI?

For the past five years, the narrative around Artificial Intelligence has been dominated by Generative AI—models designed to create text, images, or code based on human prompts. But there is a fundamental ceiling to generation: it requires a human to hold the mouse.

Defining the Agentic Shift

Agentic AI refers to systems that do more than generate suggestions; they pursue goals autonomously across an extended period. Given a high-level objective (e.g., "Resolve this user's refund request"), an Agentic AI will:

• Reason logically to break the complex objective into a series of dependent sub-tasks.
• Gather context by securely authenticating into systems of record (CRM, ERP, Billing).
• Execute actions by manipulating external APIs or databases.
• Self-correct if it encounters errors or missing data, actively reasoning through blockers without returning to the user.

Why It Matters for Enterprises

The enterprise bottleneck is rarely content creation; it is operational execution. IT Operations, Compliance, and Supply Chain management are choked by hundreds of thousands of micro-decisions executed manually by exhausted human workers following rigid runbooks (often built in legacy RPA).

Agentic AI replaces the brittle rules of RPA with dynamic reasoning. Because an agent understands the semantic intent of a workflow rather than just the pixel coordinates on a screen, it does not break when an API endpoint updates or a UI changes.
